PostGIS Consultant
Spatial database experts

PostGIS Consultant support for fast, reliable spatial databases

We design, tune and migrate PostgreSQL/PostGIS databases for GIS teams and software vendors. From schema design and GiST indexing to fixing slow queries and moving off Oracle Spatial or Esri geodatabases, delivered remotely with full knowledge transfer.

Why a specialist

What an experienced PostGIS consultant brings

PostGIS sits underneath most open-source GIS stacks: web maps, geoportals, field apps and analytics pipelines. When the spatial database is designed casually, the symptoms surface later as map layers that take seconds to draw, overlays that run for hours, areas that disagree with desktop GIS, and invalid geometries that silently break processing jobs.

As a PostGIS consultant, we fix these issues at the root. We review schemas and geometry types, settle an SRID strategy for storage versus measurement, add the right GiST or SP-GiST indexes, read execution plans with EXPLAIN ANALYZE, and break oversized polygons apart with ST_Subdivide. Every change is benchmarked before and after, so you see measured improvement rather than promises.

We also help organisations move to PostGIS from Oracle Spatial, SQL Server, shapefile collections or Esri File Geodatabases. Our database work underpins production systems such as Geoportal IGT-PR for ATR/BPN and a land and building valuation WebGIS for PT Saptasentra Jasa Perdana. We work remotely in English, under NDA, and hand over all scripts and documentation.

  • Streaming replication, scheduled backups and restore drills
Scenarios

When teams call a PostGIS consultant

The spatial database problems we are asked to solve most often.

Slow web maps

Layers and spatial searches that crawl because indexes and queries were never tuned.

Heavy overlay analysis

Intersections of forest, concession and administrative boundaries that take hours to run.

Cadastre & land data

Parcel and zoning datasets that need precise areas and clean shared boundaries.

Leaving proprietary platforms

Organisations migrating from Oracle Spatial or licensed geodatabases to cut cost and lock-in.

Routing & logistics

Shortest-path, service-area and travel-distance analysis built on pgRouting.

SaaS products with maps

Software vendors who need a PostGIS expert to review the database behind their product.

Why Codeinspira

Consultants who also build the applications

We do not just hand over recommendations; we implement and measure them.

01

Grounded in production systems

Our database designs run behind WebGIS platforms and geoportals used every day. We understand how schema choices ripple into map servers and front ends.

02

Measured results

Every optimisation is benchmarked before and after with EXPLAIN ANALYZE and real workloads. You get numbers, not adjectives.

03

Knowledge transfer, remotely

We explain the reasoning behind each change in English and document it. Working hours at GMT+7 overlap APAC fully and EU mornings for live reviews.

FAQ

FAQ: PostGIS Consultant

What does a PostGIS consultant do?
A PostGIS consultant designs spatial schemas, defines SRID strategy, builds the right indexes, tunes slow queries, plans migrations, and sets up backup and replication. We also cover advanced areas such as PostGIS Raster, Topology and pgRouting.
Why are my PostGIS spatial queries slow?
Typical causes are missing GiST indexes, functions that prevent index use, very large and complex polygons, per-row ST_Transform calls and stale table statistics. We prove the cause with EXPLAIN ANALYZE before changing anything, then benchmark the fix.
Which SRID should we store our data in?
Many teams store in EPSG:4326 for interchange, use the geography type or a local projected CRS such as the appropriate UTM zone for accurate measurement, and serve EPSG:3857 to web maps. The best choice depends on your extent, accuracy needs and query patterns, which is exactly what we assess.
How much does PostGIS consulting cost?
It depends on database size, the number of issues to address, migration complexity and whether you need ongoing support. A free consultation lets us scope the work and give you an estimate.
Can you migrate from Oracle Spatial, SQL Server or Esri geodatabases to PostGIS?
Yes. We use GDAL/OGR, QGIS and ArcGIS Pro to move data, then validate feature counts, attributes, geometry validity and coordinate systems. Business logic such as triggers, domains or relationship classes is re-implemented in PostgreSQL.
How long does a PostGIS audit and optimisation take?
An initial audit usually takes a few days. Implementation time depends on the number of changes and how carefully they must be rolled out on a live system, which we always do in reversible steps.
Can PostGIS serve vector tiles directly?
Yes. ST_AsMVT generates Mapbox Vector Tiles in the database, served through lightweight servers like pg_tileserv or Martin, or through GeoServer, and rendered in MapLibre GL JS or OpenLayers.
How do you handle access to our production database?
We sign an NDA, work with least-privilege accounts or anonymised copies where possible, and never keep your data after the engagement. All scripts, configuration and documentation are handed over to you.
