Utility Network GIS

Utility network GIS for water, power, gas and fiber: PostGIS topology, upstream/downstream tracing, valve isolation, outage maps and SCADA/IoT integration.

Utility Network GIS
Utility GIS

Utility Network GIS that traces, isolates and keeps crews moving

We build custom utility network GIS on PostgreSQL/PostGIS for water, electricity, gas, telecom and drainage operators. Network topology, tracing, outage mapping, field inspection and SCADA/IoT data in one open-source platform you fully own.

Beyond asset maps

What a utility network GIS should do for operations

Many utilities still hold their networks in CAD drawings, per-district shapefiles or scanned as-builts. That data can be displayed, but it cannot answer operational questions: if this main bursts, which valves isolate it, and which customers lose supply? A utility network GIS answers those questions because every segment and device is stored with its connectivity, so the network can be traversed, not merely viewed.

Codeinspira models your network in PostgreSQL/PostGIS with explicit connectivity rules: pipes to valves and nodes, conductors to poles and transformers, fiber to splice closures and distribution points. On top of that model we build upstream and downstream tracing, isolation analysis, outage and leak mapping, mobile inspections and maintenance work orders, so the GIS becomes a daily operations tool rather than a static archive.

To be clear about positioning: this is a custom, open-source alternative, not Esri's ArcGIS Utility Network product. ArcGIS Utility Network is mature and feature-rich, and if you are already invested in ArcGIS Enterprise it may be the right fit. Our approach suits operators who want workflows tailored to them, control over their data model, and costs that do not scale with every new user or crew.

Utility types

Networks we model

Each utility has different assets and connectivity rules; the data model is built around yours.

Water distribution

Mains, valves, hydrants, meters and district metered areas to support non-revenue water reduction.

Electricity distribution

Medium and low voltage feeders, poles, transformers and customer connections per feeder.

Gas networks

Pipelines, pressure regulating stations and valves for planning and emergency response.

Telecom & fiber

Fiber routes, ducts, poles, splice closures and distribution points for FTTH rollout and fault response.

Stormwater & sewer

Drains, culverts, manholes and flow direction for flood response and maintenance planning.

Campuses & industrial estates

Multi-utility networks of a private estate, port or campus managed in one system.

Why Codeinspira

Spatial database depth plus field-ready software

A utility GIS lives or dies on its data model and on how well it fits field work.

01

PostGIS done properly

We design schemas, spatial indexes and topology rules from day one. The network stays consistent as it grows to thousands of kilometres.

02

Honest about trade-offs

If you are deeply invested in Esri, we will say so rather than push a rebuild. Our open-source approach is strongest where flexibility and licence cost matter most.

03

Remote, accountable delivery

We work remotely in English under NDA, with GMT+7 hours overlapping APAC and the Middle East fully and EU mornings. You receive the complete source code and documentation.

FAQ

FAQ: Utility Network GIS

Is your utility network GIS the same as Esri's ArcGIS Utility Network?
No. ArcGIS Utility Network is an Esri product that runs on ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Pro licences. We build a custom utility network GIS on PostGIS and other open-source components, with tracing and isolation logic tailored to your workflows and no per-user licensing.
How is a utility network GIS different from a normal web map?
A normal web map displays layers, while a utility network GIS stores how assets connect. That connectivity is what enables upstream/downstream tracing, isolation analysis and affected-customer counts during outages.
Can you use our existing CAD drawings and shapefiles?
Yes. We convert DWG/DXF, Shapefile, KML and File Geodatabase data into PostGIS, then repair snapping errors and disconnected segments so the network is topologically valid.
What does a utility GIS project cost?
Cost depends on network length, the quality of your source data, the number of asset types, mobile app requirements and integrations such as SCADA, CIS or billing. We provide a scoped estimate after a free consultation and a review of sample data.
How long does implementation take?
It depends mostly on data volume and quality. We usually start with a pilot zone or district so results can be validated, then roll out in phases across the rest of the network.
Can the GIS integrate with our SCADA or IoT sensors?
Yes, if readings are accessible through an API, database, historian export or another readable interface. Values such as pressure, flow and device status are then shown live on the corresponding assets.
Can we host the utility GIS on-premise for security reasons?
Yes. Many utilities treat network data as critical infrastructure information, so we deploy on-premise or in a private cloud, with role-based access, audit logs and no dependency on our servers.
Who owns the source code and network data?
You do. We work under NDA and hand over the full source code, database schema and documentation, so your team or another vendor can continue development without lock-in.
